The Interdisciplinary Beit Midrash Programs
The Interdiscipinary Beit Midrash Programs are the heart of the educational, Torah study, and academic activity at Beren College. The students in the Beit Midrash programs are women and men with diverse academic and Torah backgrounds, including former yeshiva and seminary students alongside university graduates, PhD candidates, veteran educators and pensioners.
The uniqueness of the Beit Midrash programs lies in their interdisciplinary nature, incorporating traditional yeshiva style analysis with critical academic tools and comparative approaches. The program aims to create a cadre of outstanding Torah educators who are grounded in the modern world and can present a coherent and compelling Jewish vision for the next generation.
Designed for men and women who already have advanced background in religious studies and hold undergraduate or graduate degrees, these innovative frameworks seamlessly integrate traditional Jewish scholarship with modern research methods, exegetical methodology, and rigorous academic discipline. Within these unique programs, students and fellows have the opportunity to engage in traditional text study, attend interdisciplinary seminars and pedagogic workshops, and participate in advanced academic courses.
Berren College's academic Beit Midrash programs bridge the traditional disconnect between the world of the yeshiva and the world of academia, span the divide between theory and practice, and navigate the tension between particularism and pluralism. These integrated programs encourage the combination of theoretical study with hands-on work in education, communal service, and public affairs. Students and fellows are involved in teaching, research, and communal leadership alongside their studies, and receive professional guidance from Beren College faculty as an essential part of their program.
The academic Beit Midrash programs of Beren College include:
• The Interdisciplinary Beit Midrash
• The Moshe Green Beit Midrash for Women’s Leadership
• The Women's Halacha Program
• Graduate courses in Talmud and Jewish Philosophy
Graduates of the academic Beit Midrash programs of Beren College are well versed in traditional and modern sources, comfortable with diverse opinions, and able to convey the relevance of Jewish values to the modern and post-modern world. They can be found enhancing Jewish identity and values in all sectors of Israeli society and in communities throughout the world.
